Our story.
At Shwen Shwen, we offer an unforgettable dining experience that brings the rich, vibrant flavours of Sierra Leone to Sevenoaks.
Our restaurant is not just about food; it’s about sharing a piece of my heritage, connecting through taste, and inviting you into a world of bold, authentic flavours, reimagined for the modern palate.
The name Shwen Shwen comes from the Krio language, meaning ‘fancy.’ But for me, it represents something much deeper. It’s a celebration of Sierra Leone’s culinary legacy, reinterpreted with my own twist. Every dish we serve reflects the traditions of my homeland, fused with contemporary influences that create a truly unique dining experience.
Growing up in Freetown, Sierra Leone, food was always more than a meal, it was a way to connect with those around you. The kitchen was the heart of our home, where I learned from my mother and grandmother how to cook with love, respect, and a deep understanding of the ingredients that made our food special. The flavours of Sierra Leone are earthy, rich, and vibrant. These flavours are woven into every dish at Shwen Shwen, and it is my privilege to bring those tastes to you.
Dining at Shwen Shwen is about more than just enjoying a meal, it’s about connecting with the culture and heritage of Sierra Leone through food. The atmosphere of our restaurant has been thoughtfully designed to reflect the warmth, elegance, and intimacy we want you to experience as you dine with us. From the rich, inviting colours of the interior to the carefully curated menu, every detail has been crafted to create a welcoming space where you can relax, unwind, and indulge in something truly special.
Our exclusive Cotton Tree Yard courtyard provides a peaceful outdoor setting where you can enjoy your meal in a relaxed atmosphere. It’s the perfect space to connect with friends and loved ones while enjoying the vibrant essence of Shwen Shwen.
Shwen Shwen is the culmination of a journey that began in my childhood in Freetown cooking alongside my family, and those early lessons shaped the foundation of the food I create today. After moving to Kent, I transitioned from a career in finance to pursue my passion for food. In 2017, I began catering under the name Maria Bradford Kitchen, and over time, my business grew into what is now Shwen Shwen. With the support of my community and my love for Sierra Leonean food, I’ve had the privilege of sharing my journey through my cookbook, Sweet Salone, and now, through my debut restaurant.
Shwen Shwen is more than a restaurant. It’s a celebration of Sierra Leone, of the food that shaped me, and of the connection that food brings. I’m honoured to share this chapter with you and invite you to experience the bold flavours and rich traditions of Sierra Leone, beautifully reimagined in our dining room.
